People often feel helpless when they have pain in the neck or a headache at the back of their head. Pain relievers don't always help, and rubbing or movement of any type worsens the pain. Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center in Thousand Oaks knows the many causes of upper cervical pain or neck pain. Here's what causes the pain and what to do for it.

.

About the Neck

The spine joins the head at the base of the skull. The neck or cervical spine extends to just below the collarbone. It's responsible for holding up the head and moving it in a nod, for example. Neck pain almost always involves the back of the head since they're joined together.

Causes of Upper Cervical Pain

Spinal cord compression and cervical stenosis are two serious causes of neck pain. Spinal cord compression is when the spine is under pressure. This involves the nerves in the spine. This will affect various parts of the body depending on the location of the compression. For instance, neck pain might affect the arms and shoulders.

Cervical stenosis is the narrowing of the canal through which the spinal cord or nerves run through.  It can be a form of arthritis or a disk bulge/herniation. This happens mostly with age but is no less a cause for neck pain. The discs might dry up resulting in herniation, and they will no longer cushion the vertebrae. The bones and ligaments in the spine thicken which narrows the spinal canal. The overall effect is pain and severe curtailment of range of motion.

In order to find the cause of your pain, our chiropractor may do an X-ray, and if needed, an MRI. Pain relief, mobility, and range of motion will be restored following a neck adjustment. To maintain the correction, the chiropractor might recommend Class IV Cold Laser or Spinal Decompression in addition to exercises to maintain range of motion.
