Mental Health and Positivity: Meditating!

At Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center in Thousand Oaks, CA, we believe in the complete health and well-being of all our patients. Our philosophy on wellness incorporates the mental health and cognitive components that can be tuned to optimum well-being. This is the healing power of meditation. The body has an intelligence that enables it to heal and stay well. Meditation helps focus that intelligence.

Why Meditate?

Meditation is proven to have a powerful effect on the development and maintenance of total good health. First and foremost, it is a powerful stress and anxiety reducer. It promotes emotional health and enhances self-awareness. Other benefits can include an increased attention span, a reduction in age-related memory loss, improved sleep. For some, it is particularly useful in the fight against addiction. In others, it is known to help in the control of high blood pressure.

How to Meditate

Meditation can also be termed a quest for increased mindfulness. Here are three steps to guide you into a simple meditation:

1. Make yourself comfortable and sit still for a few moments,

2. Focus on your breath. Observe your breath going in and out with each full inhalation-exhalation cycle, and

3. Continue doing this for several minutes. If your mind drifts elsewhere, gently bring it back to your breath.

All people experience random thoughts and distractions when meditation. This is normal and does not mean that you are doing it incorrectly. Be gentle with your wandering mind. The key is to release the thoughts and refocus on your breath.
