Herniated Disc and Chiropractic FAQs

You may have heard someone say that he had a "slipped disc" or a "herniated disc" at some point in your life and wondered what that was. Alternatively, you may be wondering if you have a problem like this. Here are some answers to common questions about herniated discs:

back pain

What is a Spinal Disc?

Spinal discs rest between each vertebra. They are filled with fluid that gives them some "bounce" and allows them to absorb shock. The purpose of these discs is to prevent bone-on-bone contact and provide cushioning for the vertebrae.

What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc is one where the disc's outer covering has split or cracked, allowing the internal fluid to leak out. This is painful for two main reasons: The outer covering of the disc has pain receptors, and the fluid that leaks out can also aggravate the nerves running through the center.

How is This Different From Other Common Disc Problems?

Many people are confused about this thanks to a lack of clear information in the general media. Here's how it works:

  • A herniated disc is actually leaking fluid.
  • A bulging disc is flatter and wider than it belongs, but is not yet leaking.
  • A slipped disc is not a proper medical term. However, it usually refers to a disc prolapse, where the disc has moved out of line with the other discs in the spine.
  • A herniated disc that is also bulging is said to have a protrusion.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic care for herniated discs is aimed at reducing the pressure on the area and helping to get the disc fluid back where it belongs. This is done through a combination of spinal decompression, spinal realignment, and other related therapies. Which specific therapies are included vary to meet each patient's individual needs. Typically, there will be several treatments to bring about full results.
